About

My name is Pablo Unzueta (b. July 22, 1994) I am a first generation Chilean-American and bilingual freelance photojournalist based in the Los Angeles region. Driven by my own curiosity, I informally began documenting the Los Angeles streets at the age of 17. I focused on themes of economic inequality, environmental injustice and the nuances of daily life. My work has evolved into long-form photo projects that examine the consequences of environmental pollution and the industrial complex.

My formal career as a photojournalist started with a photojournalism internship at CalMatters (2021), where I have since become a regular contributor to the non-profit news organization—along with other organizations such as, The Guardian, High Country News, and other local outlets. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from California State University, Long Beach, I became a full-time freelance photojournalist in 2021.

I eventually got hired as El Tecolote’s first-ever staff photojournalist through CatchLight and Report for America’s fellowship program in the Bay Area (2023) the longest running bilingual newspaper in California that prints in Spanish and English. As a current fellow based in the Bay Area, I am also accepting assignments from other publications.
